COMMUNITY COUNCIL AGM

E-mail Print

The AGM of Mullinahone Community Council took place in the Knocknagow Community Centre on Wednesday. The financial report was given by Treasurer Mick Larkin. Figures showed a reflection of the current economic climate with income falling. In spite of this much good work inspired by the council in the parish and in the village has been either completed or begun. To raise finances, a special effort will be made to increase membership in the Community Council monthly draw which starts again next month. Among the community projects facilitated by our community council are the improvements in the village due to tidy towns work; the fabulous community park which has just opened on the Thurles/Ballingarry road; the new community text alert service in the parish. The upgrading of the local water supply which has just begun in the area was welcomed and the work put in by local county councillor Eddie O’Meara to these projects was greatly appreciated.

COMMUNITY PARK OPENS

On Tuesday evening the news spread like wildfire and great crowds thronged to the park. The fine weather has also especially helped. Visitors to the park are asked to be careful with parking and also to fully observe the Park rules.

WATER PIPES GO DOWN

Local people were thrilled to see a start being made last week to the new Regional Water Supply Scheme. This upgrade to a supply which is 50 years old has been eagerly looked forward to. Early reports on the laying of pipes in the Kilvemnon and Mullinoly areas indicate that progress is being made quickly.

TIDY TOWNS

The village has received a major facelift in the past few weeks. Our thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors who have rallied round. If anybody would like to sponsor a hanging basket or even to look after one contact Alma Vaughan.

MULLINAHONE GAA

Results of club membership draw: 1st Tracy Lonergan/Curran, 2nd Tom Carey, 3rd Brian Vaughan, 4th Fr. John McGrath P.P, 5th Neil Thompson. The club membership blitz was very successful bringing about an increase in membership over last year. Not so good for the club was the hurling result over the weekend when Mullinahone went down 2.21 to 0.13 in the last league game of the South championship. However, we have qualified for yet another South Tipp semifinal in where we play Killenaule.

We are grateful to selectors Kyran Vaughan and Eddie Carey who were forced to line out on Saturday. Kyran played on the team when we first played senior hurling back in 1992 which was 22 championships ago.

WELL DONE ALEX

Congratulations to Alex Maher, Killaghy Street, who won a bronze medal at the national finals of the Community Games in Art and Model Making.

Killenaule and Mullinahone to meet again in semi-final

E-mail Print

Killenaule beat Mullinahone easily, 2-21 to 0-13 in the South senior hurling championship at Fethard on Saturday. The game had no bearing on the outcome of the championship but the next meeting will carry more significance as they were drawn on the night to meet in the semi-final.

Carrick Swan play Ballingarry in the other semi-final with both games taking place week ending June 16.

Killenaule seized the initiative early on, racing into 0-4 to no score lead in the first eight minutes, Tony Doyle linking up with Niall O’Dwyer for the opener, followed by a Daniel Guinan point and a quick brace from Pat Kerwick.

It took Mullinahone longer to settle but were well in the game after two converted frees from center-forward Donal Coady. Killenaule’s Michael Doyle who amassed 1-6 from play after the hour, fired over a great point in the twelfth minute, before Donal Coady replied for CJK with another free.

Mullinahone’s Micheal Dunne then had a couple of fine points in quick succession, the first a neat score from his left side and the second the fishing touch to great move involving Edwin O’Meara and Donal Coady.

With Mullinahone eating into the lead, Killenaule began to up the ante. Tony Doyle began dominating on the edge of the square, pointing himself in the 17th minute, before twice turning provider for his brother Michael, either  side of another Donal Coady free.

Killenaule’s younger players were working extremley hard, in particular Daniel Guinan, who set up Tony Doyle for another score to extend Killenaule’s lead. Midfielder Thomas Keaveney tagged on another and Killenaule were well on top with halftime approaching.

Further points from Tony Doyle and a huge one from Daniel Guinan against another Donal Coady free for Mullinahone gave Killenaule an interval lead of 0-13 to 0-7.

The game was virtually over as a contest minutes after the re-start. Michael Doyle, having scored a point from a tight angle as play resumed, moments later collected a Pat Kerwick pass, ghosted past two markers and buried a low shot to the back of the Mullinahone net.

Joe Hogan and Damien McCormack exchanged points soon after and then Donal Coady had a point to narrow the gap. In truth Mullinahone were struggling to make any inroads against an assured Killenaule backline bolstered by the ever dependable Declan Fanning.

Their attack was undoubtedly weakened by the absense of Eoin Kelly and USA-bound pair Sean Curran and Cahal Horan. However Micheal Dunne was lively throughout and pointed again in the 45h minute, before Eoin Fennelly landed a long range free, for a foul on Philip O’Shea.

Killenaule were still very much in command though and pulled further clear with three in a row from Tony Doyle, Damien McCormack and Michael Doyle. Eoin Fennelly had another long range effort for Mullinahone with time running out, before the Doyle brothers once again had points to enhance their escalating personal tallies. Finally a goal following some skillful improvisation by Dominic Blake wrapped up proceedings.

Killenaule were  full value for this victory, and with John O’Dwyer and Kieran Bergin to come back into the team  they will probably take their semi-final place as marginal favourites although Mullinahone will be hoping the return of Eoin Kelly, Paul Curran et al, will be sufficient to sway matters in their favour in a fortnight’s time.

Killenaule: Gerry Kennedy, Stephen Browne, Paddy Codd, Pat O’Connor, Joe O’Dwyer, Declan Fanning, Stephen Hannigan, Niall O’Dwyer (0-1) Thomas Keaveney (0-1) Daniel Guinan (0-2), Damien McCormack (0-2), Patrick Kerwick (0-3), Michael Doyle (1-6), Tony Doyle (0-6, 2frees), Dominic Blake (1-0).

Mullinahone: R. Walsh, Niall Cronin, AJ Cronin, Ky Vaughan, Luke Mullally, Eoin Fennelly (0-2), Philip O’Shea, Edwin O’Meara, Eddie Carey, Niall Mullally, Donal Coady (0-7 6frees), Michael Dunne (0-3), Michael Lutrell, Joey O’Meara, Joe Hogan (0-1)

VILLAGE LOOKING
BETTER

E-mail Print

Parishioners coming into the village have noticed the facelifts that many properties have received recently. As part of the Tidy Towns 2013 effort many of the derelict properties in the village have been tidied up and painted. Our thanks to the Tidy Towns Committee, who have guided the effort. The approach roads into the village have also been tidied up and are looking much nicer now that grass is beginning to green up. A small number of people have put in a lot of effort, so it is up to the rest of us to lend a helping hand. One way we can do this is to keep an eye on litter control and not allow litter louts to go scot free. Well done to the local primary school and the G.A.A. grounds beside the school for the effort put in.

LOCAL LOTTO

The last local lotto jackpot draw took place on Monday, May 20. The numbers drawn were 6,8,13 and 30. There was no jackpot winner, not even a match 3 winner, so the match 3 prize was divided between 5 Lucky Dips who shared €150. Congrats to Dick Egan, Nora Morrissey, Ben Lyons, Niamh Keogh and Ollie Vaughan. Next draw is on Tuesday night next after the Bank Holiday when the jackpot could be worth €7,300.

COMMUNITY GAMES

Alex Maher, Cathal Brett and Daniel Vaughan were all taking part in the Community Games Art and Model making National Finals in Athlone last weekend.

SPLIT THE POT

The weekly split the pot draw in Kilvemnon National School is proving to be a great success. The winners so far have been: Week 1 Claire Cummins-Cawley, Week 2 Aonghus Mac Domhnaill, Week 3 John Treacy, Week 4 Mary Dunne, Week 5 Michelle Brophy and Week 6 the winner of €128 was Barry Crowley (Jnr).

A WELCOME SIGHT

Work on the Fethard line water supply is started on Monday, May 27. For 50 years since its start in the early 1960s local people have looked forward to this service being upgraded. In recent years water, or rather the lack of it, has been a very hot topic. Now, at last with the arrival of pipes, men and machinery we are convinced that the scheme is definitely about to be upgraded. No one can be more pleased than local Independent Cllr Eddie O’Meara who has fought tooth and nail for this scheme since he was first elected to the County Council in 1999.

A NOTE

John Bolger in London managed to hear the cuckoo while out walking recently. That is more than many of us country people have managed to do!

GAA

Well done to our senior hurlers who reached the semi-finals of the South Tipp SH championship on Saturday last by defeating Carrick Davins. They join Ballingarry, Carrick Swan and Killenaule in the last four.

Mullinahone knock Carrick Davins out of race for South Tipp title

E-mail Print

Mullinahone's Michael Dunne is put under pressure by Carrick Davins' Willie O'Dywer in the South SHC tie at Fethard won by Mullinahone.

Champions Mullinahone proved too strong for Carrick Davins in the South Tipperary senior hurling championship at Fethard, winning 2-17 to 0-15.

Since early in the season the Davins full back line has been a cause of worry to them. In the Carrick derby it was Bill Walsh who exposed them. On Saturday it was the Horan-Kelly duo who struck in the first six minutes. Horan opened the scoring within a minute with a point. A minute later Eoin Kelly placed him for a goal. Horan goaled again in four minutes. Kelly pointed from play and Horan followed suit in six minutes.

The rest of the Mullinahone attack got in on the act and points followed from Sean Curran, Donal Cody and Eoin Fennelly. Eleven minutes gone and 2-6 on the scoreboard with nothing for the Davins.

Fair play to Davins they didn’t throw in the towel. Noel Butler opened their account with two points, but Eoin Kelly came back with one. Noel Butler and Eoin Kelly from a free exchanged points as Davins began to steady. A Davins mini rally was begun with a point from Lee Mackey from a long distance free. Stephen Cronin from distance and Stephen Moroney from a free narrowed the gap. J.J. Butler pointed in 22 minutes to leave the score 2-8 to 0-7.

However, Mullinahone put on a bit of a spurt and points from Sean Curran, Eoin Kelly, Sean Curran and Eoin Fennelly eased Mullinahone towards half time. Half way through the first half J.J. Ryan replaced Richie McGrath who was injured. Liam Mackey moved to full back where he did a fine job of curbing Eoin Kelly.

Mullinahone after their whirlwind start began to stand off Davins and allow them possession. After 26 minutes Davins’ Willie O’Dwyer saw yellow for a personal foul as he stopped Eoin Kelly on his way through. Half time score: Mullinahone C.JK. 2-12, Carrick Davins 0-7.

Davins’ position looked hopeless and got even worse in the fourth minute when Eoin Fennelly pointed. Next Friday Fennelly is in the Tipp U21 panel to play Limerick. Shane Butler pointed in four minutes and within a minute came a significant event - Mullinahone’s first wide of the game. They had gone through the entire first half scoring 2-12 and not having even a single wide.

In seven minutes, Eoin Kelly sent a long distance free wide and two minutes later Shane Butler pointed from an acute angle. Points followed for Davins from a Stephen Moroney free, Noel Butler and Stephen Moroney from play. In 14 minutes Liam Mackey drove a long distance free wide. Perhaps it was an omen. Mullinahone sent on A.J. Cronin and Micheál Dunne. Donal Cody pointed in the 19th minute from a Sean Curran pass to relieve the Kickhams scoring drought.

Two Stephen Moroney points from frees and a point from play by Noel Butler pushed Davins into rallying range. A Donal Cody point steadied Mullinahone. Davins sought goals which they didn’t get with A.J. Cronin and Paul Curran clearing under pressure. Sean Curran caught a fine ball and pointed. Donal Cody pointed again to end the scoring in the 28th minute. A close in free to Davins was saved by Alan Walsh at the expense of a fruitless 65. Stephen Moroney was injured during added time and was replaced by Aaron O’Halloran. In spite of five minutes of added time much of which was taken up by injuries to two players there was no further scoring and Davins couldn’t find that goal which they so badly needed.

Mullinahone: Alan Walsh, Kevin Walzer, Paul Curran, James Connolly, Luke Mullally, Gary Cronin, Philip O’Shea, Edwin O’Meara, Eoin Fennelly, Donal Cody, Niall Cronin, Sean Curran, Cathal Horan, Eoin Kelly, Sean Walzer. Subs used: A.J. Cronin and Micheal Dunne.

Carrick Davins: Adam Foran, Keith Condon, Richie McGrath, Stephen Cronin, Michael Ryan, Lee Mackey, Willie O’Dwyer, Pa Harris, Jim Walsh, Gerry Robinson, Noel Butler, Michael Coady, J.J. Butler, Shane Butler, Stephen Moroney. Subs used: John Joe Ryan and Aaron O’Halloran.

Referee: Paddy Ivors (Ballingarry).
