Rainfall in 2014

The rainfall really began for 2014 with December 2013 when it rained very heavily. The taps were turned on even heavier in January and February when over 300mm of rain cascaded down.In March, April and May rainfall eased off with the lovely Spring and Summer of April to September, with the latter month being the driest of the year with only 6.5mm of rain.

Just to remind us rain came back strongly in October and November with December easing off. In all, 1016.6mm of rain fell on 206 days in 2014. January was the wettest month of the year with 158.8mm of rainfall closely followed by February with 153.2mm. September was the driest month, with July second driest with 29.2mm of rain.

In contrast, November 13th was the wettest day of the year with 31.1mm of rainfall with October 3rd being next in line with 30.7mm. The longest completely dry spell came in June with 14 days from the 11th to the 24th inclusive completely dry. A similar 13 day spell took place from September 6th to the 18th inclusive. 2014 was the wettest year since 2009 with rainfall somewhat above average. This would indicate that 2015 should be drier, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Year Ends Year Begins

The 2014 GAA year for Mullinahone C.J.Kickhams on Saturday last.  The long delayed South Tipp Intermediate Football final against neighbours Grangemockler took place in Kilsheelan.Despite being rank outsiders, Mullinahone only went down by 3 points 2-07 to 0-10. It was a game that we could easily have won, but in the end the honours went to Grangemockler giving them their first adult football final win over Mullinahone in more than a century.

What a pity for all concerned that such games cannot be played in Summer/Autumn instead of the depths of Winter. Well done to our lads and their mentors on a decent run in this championship. Our congratulations to Kilsheelan and to Bill and Paul Maher on winning the South Tipp U21A final on Sunday when they defeated Swan 0-13 to 0-10.  They continued the form which they showed against ourselves on our first day out in that same championship in October. Congratulations, also, to C.J.Kickham’s club secretary, Eddie McCarthy who has been elected South Tipp PRO for 2015.

Local Lotto Jackpot

The local lotto jackpot draw returns after an end of year break on December 29th. The jackpot now stands at over €9,000, so if you want a prosperous New Year, do be in.  Next draw will take place on Monday 12th January.

Juvenile AGM

All players from U6 to U16 must register and give payment to Juvenile club membership officer, Josephine Britton and not to your team manager.

Can you think?

Can you think of anybody away from Mullinahone who would like a copy of the Mullinahone GAA History for Christmas or to start 2015?

Under 21s Are Out

After a host of ifs, buts and maybes, Mullinahone are out of the South Tipp U21A Hurling Championship.  On Sunday in Cloneen, we drew with Ballingarry 0-07 each, but we needed to win by at least 7 points. When we led by four points at the three-quarter stage, it looked possible, but it was not to be.We didn’t score again while Ballingarry scored four points to draw the game. The damage was done in Mullinahone when Kilsheelan beat us. Perhaps, the one good thing to emerge from the game was the return after injury of Denis Connolly after two years on the sideline. It was a pity that our U21 hurlers didn’t get to play a game until Winter had arrived. So much for hurling being a Summer game.

Community Council

The Council would like to thank all who contributed to a lovely celebration for Sheila Foley and Mick Larkin’s retirement party, in particular Fr. McGrath, the Parish Choir and all who helped with the catering.

The community enjoyed a lovely gathering in the village last Sunday evening for the lighting of our Christmas tree.Thank to Paul and Tracey Curran who donated the tree and to the Choir and John Willie who entertained all. Our thanks to Jackie Bolger who put the 3,000 lights on the tree and to Eddie O’Meara MCC who officially turned on those lights.

Thanks to Sharon Scott and Community Council members who contributed to the cost. The Council would like to thank you for all your support in 2014 and to wish you all a very Happy Christmas. We look forward to meeting many more of you at regular meetings in 2015.

Schoolboy Soccer

Mullinahone Schoolboy Soccer U15’s would like to thank Mr. Thos. Lonergan of Lonergans Gala in Mullinahone for sponsoring the teams new jerseys. As the young players have continued to develop and grow into young men, lately they have had to play in borrowed kits to enable them play their matches.

This new kit will befit their position as the second placed team in the U15 championship in South Tipperary with 12 points from five matches. At the halfway point in the season, the U13 team sponsored by Crocanóir is progressing even better than the U15’s and are top of the U13 championship with 16 points from six games played. This leaves them four points ahead of their nearest rivals Burncourt/Vee Rovers whom they defeated 3 -1 last week in Mullinahone.
