A number of weeks ago, our under 14 hurlers were chosen by the South board to represent the board in the county under 14 b hurling semi-final. This situation arose because the board had not completed its task of completing the championship to meet county deadlines.
In a playoff, we defeated St. Patrick’s to win the right to represent the south, in the county semi-final in Cashel, we were a shade unlucky to go under to Knockvilla Kickhams. They in turn went on to defeat Lorrha after a replay to win the county title. Back in the south Mullinahone had already qualified to play in the south final.
This eventually took place on Saturday morning last in Ballingarry at 11am against St. Patrick’s, as in the representation play off. Once again, the result was as before with victory going to Mullinahone. Ballingarry was not at its best on Saturday morning but, at least, the rain stayed away as Paddy Ivors set the game in motion.
Mullinahone had the advantage of a strong breeze in the first half. Gradually they built up a 0-5 to 0-0 interval lead. St Pat’s began to come back into the game, but a goal from Shelly stopped the comeback in its tracks. Pats’ cause really looked hopeless when substitute Sean O Connell scored a second Mullinahone goal.
Fair play to the St. Pats lads they regrouped and tried again but the goal that they wanted never came and at the final whistle, Mullinahone were still a five points clear 2-6 to 0-7. This win made Mullinahone south champions and also justified them going forward to represent south Tipperary in the county championship last month.
Great credit is due to the trainers of the under 14 team Eddie McCarthy, Johnny Kennedy and Noel O Shea. Captain of the team was Niall Kennedy. The team lined out: Richard Walsh, Michael Dunne, George Browning, Robert Reilly, Conor Vaughan, Niall Kennedy, David Walzer, Luke Mullally, Jack Shelly, Paul Gayson, Jack McCarthy, Donal O Brien, Joe Hogan, Sean Walzer & Graham Horan.
Subs used: Sean O Connell.
Of this team, Richard Walsh, George Browning, Niall Kennedy, Jack Shelly and Luke Mullally were all members of the parish under 16 team which contested the county final the previous week.
Final Postponed
The under 21 hurling final against St. Pat’s on Sunday last was postponed because of pitch conditions. The game will now take place on Sunday next in Monroe at 2.30pm with Paddy Ivors as referee.
