Hurling

E-mail Print

Sunday in Semple Stadium was by and large a disappointing day for Mullinahone people. The loss to Limerick in the final minutes was a major “downer”. We didn’t even have the consolation as we often had since 1988 of a Mullinahone representative on the Tipp team playing well. Our early view of the programme saw Paul Curran and Eoin Kelly listed as numbers 25 and 26 and neither was brought on. In the Intermediate game, things went somewhat better. Sean O’Meara was a selector on the team, while Kevin Walzer was No. 18 on the programme.

He didn’t get a run as the team stole the game in extra time, but perhaps in the next round. Well done to Sean and Kevin. For Tipp’s seniors, it is going to be the roundabout route through the qualifiers. Now, it is back to senior club hurling for all our players and a virtual make or break game against Ballingarry next Sunday in Clonmel. Hurling supporters will be hoping to have their spirits lifted by good displays from the players and their selectors.

Irish Cancer Society

The Irish Cancer Society held a church gate collection in Mullinahone on May 24th and 25th. Thanks to the local people for their support and generosity, as they contributed €804 to the cause.

Under Age Games

The Juvenile monthly meeting will take place on Thursday June 12th at 8.30pm. All officers and an age group representative is expected to attend. Parents are welcome at these monthly meetings. The August U12 Tournament will be on the next agenda.

U14 Football. Our U14’s finished their championship with 2 defeats against Ballylooby/Fr. Sheehys and Clonmel Og last week. Thanks to the panel and their mentors who can now concentrate on hurling. A football shield will follow in the weeks ahead.

Under 6’s. Well done to the U6’s who recently played games against Rockwell Rovers (New Inn) and Carrick Swan and to Sean, Josephine and Brian who have great numbers in training.

Under 8’s. The U8’s recently took part in a Football Blitz in Rockwell and a Hurling blitz in Dr. Morris Park.

Coaching

U6’s and U10’s will be coached on Tuesday and Friday nights whilr U12, U14 and U16 will keep parents updated on training. Enquiries please re. coaching/training to Team Mentors as texts will not be going out as often as previously.

Club Gear. The Juvenile Club are considering purchasing club gear, jerseys hoodies, polo shirts etc. If any age group or parents are interested, please let Jackie Bolger know.

Community Meeting

A Community Meeting will be held in the Community Centre on Tuesday 17th June at 8pm to discuss the threats to our village services and to rural services in general i.e health, postal, education, garda presence and local businesses. A representative of each local household is very welcome to attend.

Talk

On this Thursday 5th June the C.J.Kickhams GAA Club will host a talk on player health and welfare and also substance abuse. Guest speakers will include John Leahy of the HSE, Sgt Sean O’Meara of the Kilkenny Garda Drug Squad and Jo O’Meara of the HSE. This talk is open to all in our community. Players over 14 and parents are encouraged to attend. Do tell your friends.

Long Service

Last week, we wrote of P.F. Mullally, the first Mullinahone person to be elected to South Tipp Co. Council. This time we deal with the person with the longest service. In 1905, Patrick Keating of Crohane Lr. Defeated William O’Brien to win the Mullinahone seat. Patrick was returned unopposed in the elections of 1908, 1911 and 1914. In 1920, Mullinahone became part of the Fethard area with 4 seats. Patrick Keating was elected as a Sinn Fein candidate along with Philip Mansfield of Mullinahone village and 2 others. In 1925, he retired after 20 years service on the Co. Council.

Local Lotto

Last draw took place on Monday 26th May. The numbers drawn were 7,21,23 ,and 27. There was no jackpot winner, but 5 Match 3 winners shared €150. Congrats to Brendan Scott, Vicky and family, Bobby Bouche Nipper and Kerryman, Maura and Aine, and Pat Walsh. Next weeks jackpot could be €5,050. If you want to win, do be in.
