Playing Season is over
The defeat of our U21 hurlers in the South semifinal on Sat. last in Kilsheelan brings the playing season to an end for CJ Kickhams GAA club. In the end our lads brought Carrick Swan to extra time in a good game of hurling. Our lads showed huge improvement since they lost their last league section game to Ballybacon. The changes made to the team since the previous game brought about a huge improvement. Most of the changes made were due to players having recovered from injury and coming back into the side. It was great to see Jack Shelly back in action and seemingly well recovered from a serious injury. The team scored 2-17 in 80 minutes of hurling, but unfortunately they were four points short. It was definitely the team’s best display of the season and had they won, no doubt, they would have been even better in the final.
Nearly all the lads are still under age next year so this is one team which is unlikely to see many changes in management. The panel of players who lined out at U21 this year was Richie Walsh, Paul Gayson, George Browning, James Phelan, Gary Cronin, Eoin Fennelly, David Walzer, Sean Walzer, Diarmuid O’Halloran, Luke Mullally, Cathal Horan, Jack Shelly, Stephen Quirke, Micheál Dunne, Graham Horan, Joe Hogan, Kevin McGrath, Jack McCarthy, Edward Dunne, Colin Byrne and Liam Hicks. It is also hoped that Denis Connolly will be recovered and able to join the squad again in 2014. When the records of 2013 are looked at it can be seen that our U21’s came closest to winning a hurling championship to end the year on a hopeful note.

Tommy is a Sean Gael
Tommy is a Sean Gael
Each year 32 people from all over County Tipperary are presented with a Sean Gael award in recognition of long service to Tipperary GAA. On Sunday last, in the Dome beside Semple Stadium Tommy O’Sullivan of Carrick Street was presented with a Sean Gael award for a lifetime of service to Mullinahone and Tipperary GAA. He becomes the 4th C.J.K Kickhams man to receive this award following in the footsteps of John Vaughan, Walty Scott RIP and Jimsy Kelly. The presentation ceremony was attended by Tommy, his family and a number of his friends from the Mullinahone GAA club.
Tommy was certainly pleased to be receiving the same award as some of the greats of Tipperary GAA such as Tony Wall, Micheál O’Meara, Pete Savage and Fr. Christy O’Dwyer. Among those who attended the presentation were the Chairman of Tipp Co. Board Sean Nugent, the patron of the GAA Dr. Dermot Clifford and Michael O Muircheartaigh who presented the awards. Tommy began his career with our club back in 1956 when he played in a county -15 football final. He is still active with the club 57 years later working as co-ordinator of the Tipperary draw. All his friends were delighted to see Tommy in Thurles looking so well. Congrats Tommy.

October was wet
Although we knew it had to happen the wet end to October still came as a surprise. The first two days of the month were quite wet but for the rest of the first two weeks it was back to rather dry weather again. However Oct. 15th produced 20.6mm of rainfall and the taps were open for the rest of the month. In all 143mm of rain fell during Oct. on 20 days making it the wettest month of 2013 so far. Rainfall in the next two months will decide whether 2013 was a rather dry year, a normal one or a rather wet one. So far rain has fallen on 144 of the 304 days during 2013.
From water in the skies we turn to water in our taps. For the Summer and Autumn workers have been busy relaying the pipes relaying the pipes bringing a water supply to the village. While some have been critical of the upset caused by the work it has to be admitted that our water supply is even now much more reliable than it was before work started. Metres seem to have been installed in the village while the outline areas have only had their connections marked out for future metering. All progress has a cost. Hopefully, the increase in lime content in our water will disappear before the work is declared complete.

Under 21s advance
After a long wait our U21 hurlers finally saw championship action on Sat. last Oct. 26th. The venue was Anner Park Cloneen and the opposition were neighbours Ballingarry. In the lead up to the game there was confusion as to both opposition and venue with Fethard being the venue and Ballybacon being the opposition. None of the confusion was of the local club’s making. However the confusion put pressure on the local clubs players and their mentors. C J K were drawn in a 3 team group who would play each other and the top two would advance to the semifinals. Ballybacon played and beat Ballingarry so Sat.
last was a make or break game for Ballingarry. A second loss would make it impossible for them to advance. Mullinahone made a good start on Sat. building up a nine point lead by halftime thanks to goals from the full forward line. The team may have eased off in the second half, but at the finish they were still eight points clear 4-11 to 1-12, so whatever about the result of the game against Ballybacon which still has to be played Mullinahone are now in the semi-final. However, that game against Ballybacon will still be wanted by both the players and their managers Johnny Kennedy to sharpen them up for future battles. Johnny and his mentors have put a lot of time into preparing this side. In the other section, Killenaule gave a walk over to Carrick Swan in a game which was to be played in Mullinahone on Sat. last.
