Water Good and Bad News

Good

Some good news to begin with about the water in the local area. It seems that the long-term leaks on the Carrick Road outside the Community Centre and the leak in the lane at the back of Crottys have been repaired. Of course, one cannot expect leaks to be repaired by Irish Water or Tipperary Co. Council if these authorities are not informed about the leaks. The onus to do this falls on locals or those who pass such leaks on a regular basis.

Bad

The bad news regarding the water supply in the local area concerns the amount of lime in the supply. In the last year, the amount of lime in our water has increased enormously. While this does not appear to be injurious to health, the deposits and scale left on electric or other kettles, washing machines, showers etc. It is both costly to remove these deposits from the machines and even more costly to replace the machines themselves.  With our new water supply now well bedded in, as they say, it is time for the supply itself to be attended to.

A Rash of Robberies

Since the run in to Christmas and its aftermath, there seems to have been a rash of robberies in the village and around the area.  So far, happily there has been no violence attached to these robberies, but eventually, this could happen and on the law of averages will happen until the community takes precautions.  By far the most serious events have been a handbag snatch at about 8pm in the village street and a robbery from 2 elderly people in the Carrick Road area.

It is time for the community to stand up and take a share in its own policing.  People should keep their eyes and ears open and be prepared to report suspicious activity in their locality and not just after an event occurs.

One is tempted to ask the question Has our local text alert service gone on a go slow since before Christmas?  We welcome Garda Lisa Prendergast to our midst and would like to make her welcome and to help her do her job.  Since her arrival, Garda Lisa has been very active in our area.  Long may it continue.  It is time for our community to see what we can do to police our community and not ask what our police can do for us with apologies to John F. Kennedy 50 years on.

Tidy Towns

Our Tidy Towns committee is gearing itself up again for another year at keeping our village even tidier. While the paper work associated with tidy towns is well looked after, the number of local volunteers and helpers to keep the village and its environs tidy is far smaller than needed. A call to arms then for the people of the streets and the village housing estates. It should be mentioned the great work done last summer by the Kickham Place residents. A tidy towns meeting will take place this Thursday night 29th January at 8.30pm in the Community Centre. All are invited as “Many hands make light work”.

Adjourned AGM

The adjourned AGM of Mullinahone C J Kickhams GAA Club will take place in the GAA Centre on Fri.night Jan.23rd .

The team gradings by the county gradings committee have been announced and are as follows. Hurling (a) minor B grade (b) U21 “B” grade (c) junior “B” grade (d) Intermediate grade. Hurling (a) minor “B” grade, U21 “A” grade, (c) junior “B” grade, (d) senior hurling has only. This leaves the question of funding 8 teams and also of fielding players for them to be decided.

Well done to Seanie Foxe who on RTE  radio recently had a fine win in an afternoon quiz show hosted by Marty Morrissey.

Cause for Concern

A number of local people have become very concerned at the amount of “dog dirt” appearing on our village streets. This dog dirt can be dangerous to children walking the streets to school and even more so to childminders pushing buggies along the streets. Dog owners should be more responsible. Such “dirt” also makes little of the efforts of our hard working tidy towns committee who over the last 3 years have managed to raise our tidy towns mark each year.
