Mullinahone Water Issue Raised in the Dáil – Hayes

Date: 05/11/2010

From: Tom Hayes T.D.

South Tipperary T.D. Tom Hayes has raised the ongoing issues with water supply in Mullinahone and Drangan in the Dáil.

In a Parliamentary Question directly to Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Tom Hayes asked the Minister if the mains replacement and other works in Mullinahone and Drangan has commenced and if the funding has been drawn down.”

“The ongoing water issues that people have experienced in Mullinahone and other areas in the Fethard region are ongoing for years now. The government has done so little to improve this essential and basic resource. It is simply third-world standard not to have water in this day and age and it is desperately unfair that this level of poor water service in ongoing for decades in the area. I am very angry with the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, who have delayed on this project at every stage. It is their responsibility to allocate funding, and they have let the people of the Fethard area down.”

“These works simply must be done – the mains must be replaced as soon as possible to repair the existing high leakage levels. Then the rest of the works to improve water flow and get more reliable water pressure can commence. The mains replacement is the first step in the process and the money has been allocated to this.

“The Minister confirmed to me in the Dáil that €8.1 million has been allocated and they have approved the Council’s plans in recent weeks. I will continue to keep up the pressure on this issue, which is crucial for people in the Fethard and Mullinahone area.”
