GAA Briefs

Our Juvenile hurlers who started the championship so well were brought back down to earth with a couple of results during the week. On Thursday, our U14’s travelled to Carrick and suffered heavily at the hands of Swan. On Sunday in Mullinahone, our U12’s were surprised and went down to Kilsheelan by 4-09 to 2-05.

C.J. Kickhams Club had an enjoyable club night and quiz in T.J. Macs on Friday night last. The night also involved the sale of local GAA memorabilia and was organised by Johnny Kennedy.

Another fine poem from the pen of Joe Tobin. This time it is a tribute to the late Jimmy Doyle.

In senior hurling, the South Tipp semi-final, Killenaule v Mullinahone was postponed until after the Munster SH final v Waterford. The Ballingarry v Swan game went ahead with victory going to a much improved Ballingarry team who now await the losers of the Killenaule and Mullinahone game in the second semi-final.

Thai Boxing

Four local girls and boys took part in the Irish Thai Boxing Championships on June 20th in Dublin. Hannah O’Connell was first up and won her division to become Irish Champion. Sasha Hehir was next in action in the 45 kg final, but lost on points after a close contest.  Bonnie Hehir at 33kg won out her division. Last in action was Che Delaney Scott, who fought twice on the day and became Irish Champion at 37kg for the second year running. We hope to be able to record many more successes in the future.

County Schools Hurling Title Won

Thursday last was another great day in the sporting history of St. Michael’s N.S. Mullinahone. Once again, after a number of near misses in recent years the school team won a County Schools Hurling Championship. In Semple Stadium, in a thrilling final, they defeated Ballycahill N.S.by 3-16 to 5-04 giving a splendid display of hurling. It is quite an achievement for schoolboys to score 16 points in an half hour of hurling, especially when they are under 11.

The game kept supporters on their toes until referee Willie Barrett blew the final whistle. The team was coached by school principal James Cahill O.S. and Tom Butler O.S. who also teaches in Mullinahone N.S. The players who played in the final were James Cody, Sean O’Dwyer, Eoin O’Dwyer, Dylan Webster, Josh Rowan, Patrick Hayes, Joanne Hickey (the only girl), Luke Vaughan, Che Delaney-Scott (who had another big win over the weekend) and Colin Kinnane who was the team captain. On Saturday the team formed the backbone of the local U12 side which began their campaign with a good win over Ballybacon-Grange.  Well done to all concerned.

Local Lotto Jackpot

The last local lotto jackpot draw took place on Monday 15th June. There was no jackpot winner, but congratulations to Grace Healy who won the Match 3 prize of €150. The winning numbers drawn were 19,22,28 and 29. The next draw will be on Monday next 29th June, when the jackpot could be worth €12,700. Tickets for the draw now cost €2.

Good Week For Hurling

The past week has been by and large a good one for hurling in Mullinahone, even if it began on Wednesday night with a two point loss for our juniors against Moyle Rovers in their league. Thursday brought the U11 schools county title in Thurles. On Friday night, our seniors came from 7 points down at half time to defeat Burgess 3-13 to 1-14 in the Dr. Fogarty Cup semi- final in Drombane. Saturday saw our U12’s begin their championship campaign with a win over Ballybacon/Grange.

On Sunday, a bus load of our juveniles travelled to Limerick to see Tipp beat the home side in the Munster semi-final. They also saw Paul Curran busy on the sideline in his new role with the senior team. Sean O’Meara, who was a selector with the Intermediate team didn’t fare so well, as they went down to Limerick. We could have a busy summer of hurling ahead of us still. Congrats to our friend, Bill Maher who made his championship debut with Tipp seniors on Sunday. We are well aware that Bill was born in Mullinahone.

Table Quiz

A table quiz will take place in T.J. Macs at 9pm on Friday night. Great crack. Great prizes. A donation to the charity of the winners choice and an auction of an unique framed Tipperary/Kilkenny jersey signed by 2015 retired hurling greats Paul Curran, Eoin Kelly and Henry Sheflin will take place.

Mass of Celebration

Mohober N.S, are holding a closing ceremony Mass in celebration of the school. It takes place at the school on Thursday 25th June at 7.30pm. All are welcome and refreshments will be served afterwards.

A Good Start

Last week was a good one for football in Mullinahone. The death of our club president, John Vaughan, R.I.P. caused our first Intermediate football game of the year to be postponed until Wednesday night in Fethard. This game was against Moyle Rovers and the rather small number of supporters who were present were well pleased with the display of the locals who scored a 1-14 to 1-08 win over Moyle Rovers. This was followed up on Saturday evening, again in Fethard with a 4 point win over Clonmel Commercials.

Again, the team gave a good display to come back after a poor start. Further games against such as Carrick Swan and  Grangemockler lie in store, but the display of some of our younger players give hope for the future. It is good also, to have seen a good turn- out of senior hurling panelists for those games. The team which lined out against Moyle Rovers was M. Lonergan, K Walzer, A. Walsh, K Mullally, M Cody, N Curran, G. Cronin, P Curran, E. Keane, M. Dunne, S. Curran, N. Cronin, J. O’Meara, P. Kelly and G. Horan.
