C.J. Kickhams GAA

Last week was a somewhat better one for C.J. Kickhams. On Wednesday night our hurlers surprised many when they had a narrow two points win in the St. Mollerans Tournament in Carrick-on-Suir. Their opponents were the Wexford club Rapparees. They were then to play host club St.Mollerans in the next round on last Saturday night, but this game was postponed.  Instead, we played Barrow Rangers in a challenge game on Saturday afternoon. This we won. One of the most pleasing aspects of the week was the way our playing pitch dried up so quickly after the heavy rain of the previous weekend. Our club is currently, in conjunction  with Tipperary County Board drawing up a three year plan for the future development of our club. Recently, the question was raised how many underage players has the club coached over the last two decades? With six  grades from U6 to U16 the figure is far higher than most people would think

Local Lotto

The last local lotto draw took place on Monday March 2nd. The numbers drawn were 1,4,12 and 28. Next draw will be on Monday March 16th when the jackpot could be worth €10,750. Wouldn't St. Patrick be delighted to win it.

“Bionn Gach Tosnú Lag”

The old Irish phrase “Bionn gach tosnú lag” “Every beginning is weak” might apply to our senior hurlers. On Sunday morning they went down at home to Silvermines 4.08 to 1.09.  Four goals shared among the “Mines” full forward line did the damage.  Scores were level at half time 1-04 each. Early in the second half, we were hit for two goals and after hitting back with three points, our rally was undone by the concession of another goal. On a very bad day for hurling, on a very heavy pitch our lightweight side found the going hard, but should not be judged too harshly. We lined out Alan Walsh, Kevin Walzer, Gary Cronin, Chris Horan, Donal Cody, Eoin Fennelly, Luke Mullally, Cathal Horan, Diarmuid O’Halloran, Sean Curran, Alan Curran, Jack Shelly, Niall O’Brien, Graham Horan, Joe Hogan. We also introduced a number of subs late in the game of whom Enda Keane showed the most dash.  We are next out in the Molleran’s Tournament during the week.

Under 12 Football

Well done to our U12 footballers who got their season off to a good start with a fine 2-01 to 0-00 win over Ballingarry in Ballingarry on Saturday last. Hopefully, we can have the players involved for you next week.

Black Spots

3 major black spots in the parish to report on this week. Two of them involve litter and the third road markings or rather the lack of them. The rubbish spots are (a) dog dirt on the village streets and (b) a major dumping site building up on the backroad in Ballydonnell and (c) the absence of road markings on the road into the village from the creamery makes the road dangerous especially during foggy or wet weather.

Community Alert

The local Community Alert service seems to have reactivated again. Of course, signs of suspicious activity to go out on text must be first reported. No guards can be inspired. To report suspicious activity, ring 0504-25100.

Mullinahone Juvenile GAA

Our first games of the year are due to begin with our U12 footballers on next Saturday February 21st at 11am in Mullinahone v Ballingarry.  U10 and U16 also back in training with U6 and U8 due to join them out on the field in the coming weeks.  We would encourage as many parents and supporters as possible to attend all games throughout the year and offer encouragement to our future stars.  Registration for U6’s to U16’s must be paid a.s.a.p. to membership officer, Josephine Britton.  All players must be members before playing any games.

Sponsored walk or run cards will be out to all age groups in the next couple of weeks for our walk/run on March 29th. Training continues each Sunday with a walk/run group catering for men/women/children of all levels. At the February monthly meeting, the following club positions were filled.  Vice-Chair, Isobel Croke and Eoin Kelly, Assistant Treasurer, Bill Tobin.

Under 21 Footballers Go Down.

For the second weekend in a row, our U21 footballers suffered a heavy defeat in the championship. On Sunday last in Fethard, they went down rather heavily to Ardfinnan. While the gap was very large at half time, the display in the second half showed a lot more determination than previously seen. A number of the younger players in particular such as Colin Shelly, Michael Cody and Enda Keane showed up well to help older stagers. Jack Shelly, John O’Grady, Richie Walsh, Paul Luttrell and Sean Walzer also showed promise at times. The standard of football displayed over the last 2 weeks must cause concern regarding the attitude to football coaching of this group of players since they were U12’s.
