32nd Annual Festival

The 32nd annual  Kickham Country Weekend Festival took place in Mullinahone on the first weekend in August.  The festival was opened by Labhras O Murchu. One of the highlights of the festival was the Kickham oration delivered by local lady, Dr. Triona Clutterbuck. Another highlight which aroused local interest was the Saturday night lecture on local folklore given by Johnny Dillon of UCD. Johnny concentrated on the folklore collected and written out by the local primary schools in the 1930’s. This collection from Ballydonnell NS, Mullinahone NS Girls, Poulacapple NS and Mullinahone NS Boys is available in the local studies section of Tipperary County Library in Thurles. It may be possible to arrange an exhibition of this folklore in Mullinahone later in the year as was done recently in Killenaule with their folklore. For some reason, the folklore from Kilvemnon NS does not seem to be available though folklore was definitely collected and transcribed there.

Micheál for Mullinahone

The launch of CJ.Kickham’s GAA Club history will take place in the local GAA Centre on Friday night, August 22nd at 8.30pm. The history will be launched by GAA Super personality, Micheál O' Muircheartaigh, so a very large turnout of locals is expected as all are invited. The history which deals with the story of gaelic games and life in the Knocknagow area since the local club was founded in 1885 has been 3 years in the preparation and runs to over 600 pages with over 200 photographs. The book also deals with Mullinahone’s relationship with other local clubs as well as with South Tipperary and Tipp County Boards. It also includes an extensive records section, so the appeal of the book should go well past the borders of the parish.  even men founded the GAA in Thurles in 1884. Seven other men also began the compiling of Mullinahone’s GAA history in 2012. The local seven were Lance Vaughan, Dick Egan, Neil Thompson, Tommy O’Sullivan, Sean O’Meara with Joe Tobin as Deputy Editor and Ricky Sheehan as Editor. The seven would like to see a big turnout on August 22nd which is the anniversary of C.J.Kickham’s death in 1882. The book committee would also like to acknowledge the help that they got from many sources in compiling “The Green above the Red”.

Record Continues

When Eoin Kelly entered the game in Portlaoise in the 59th minute on Saturday night last, he received a great cheer from the Tipp fans. When he scored a point a few minutes later, the cheer was even bigger. Eoin’s appearance on Saturday was the first in the senior hurling championship this year by a Mullinahone player. Since John Leahy first played senior hurling championship for Tipp in 1988, at least one C.J.Kickham’s hurler has played senior championship for Tipp each year since. When Eoin came on he made it 27 straight years of Mullinahone appearances by himself, John Leahy, Brian O’Meara, Paul Kelly, Paul Curran and Denis Byrne. It is a great record which we hope can continue. Many spectators, who attended the game on Saturday night were of the opinion that the Tipperary defence would have been stronger had Paul Curran, who was among the subs, been included.

GAA History Book Sponsorship

The Mullinahone GAA History Book which has been 3 years in preparation is ready to go to the printers. If you would like to be a sponsor of this history, please get your name and sponsorship to a member of the history committee or to a GAA club officer straight away. To become a sponsor costs €50 and for this your name will be added to the list of sponsors in the book and you will also receive a free copy of the history. We hope that there won’t be people who will miss this last chance to be sponsors, but we are afraid that there will be some.

Mullinahone Gun Club

The club recently purchased 60 Mallard ducks and released them on sanctuary ponds in Poulacapple, Ballyvadlea, Bawnavrona and Clonagoose. We would like to thank the landowners for the use of their ponds for this project.  Membership of the club for the current year will expire at the end of July, so the AGM will take place on Sunday 20th July at 8.30pm. All members are asked to attend.

Local Lotto

The last local lotto jackpot draw took place on Monday 7th July. The numbers drawn were 4,11,29 and 30. There was no jackpot winner, but we had 2 Match 3 winners who shared the Match 3 prize of €150. Congratulations to Josie Duggan and Rita/Alan. Next draw will be on 21st July when the jackpot could be worth €5,950.

Juvenile GAA

The U16’s were defeated by St. Mary's  in their opening game.  A speedy recovery to Michael Cody who was injured in the game.  The team travels to play Killenaule on Monday 21st July.

The U14’s came back in their game against Clonmel Og to make it 3 wins out of 3 so far. Well done to the team, the manager, Micheal Cahill and his selectors, Alan Walsh and Edwin O’Meara.  Next game is in Clerihan on Thursday 17th July against Clerihan.

The U12’s made it 2 wins from 2 when they defeated Killenaule 3-3 to 2-3.  Their manager is Paul White and his selectors are Johnny Hayes and Eamon O’Dwyer.  Next game is in Goatenbridge on Sunday 20th July against Ballybacon.                                                       Juvenile gear is now available in Meehans shop.  Paul will be adding to the range in the coming weeks, so if you get a chance call in for a look.

Tennis Coaching

Tennis coaching will take place in Mullinahone Community Park from 21st July to 25th.  For 6 to 9 year olds, it is from 10am to 11am and for 10 to 13 year olds from 11am to 12pm.Cost is €20 per child. Rackets and balls will be provided. Call or text 087-7728047. Limited spaced available. Great fun for all.

Summer Book Bus

The Summer Book Bus arrived in Mullinahone on Tuesday afternoon last with a great fanfare of balloons and a clown.  There was a large turnout of children and parents.  Do improve your child’s reading ability by bringing them along to the Summer Book Bus in the Church Carpark on Tuesdays from 2.30pm to 4.30pm for the next 5 weeks.  As the library only picks 3 villages in the county in which to run this scheme, it is important that you support the facility if you want to keep it in Mullinahone
