Local Independent Returned

E-mail Print

A collective sigh which was a mixture of relief and joy was heard in Mullinahone at around 1.20am on Sunday morning last. It had just been announced on local radio that Eddie O’Meara, Ballydonnell had been returned as a member of the new 40 people Tipperary County Council. Eddie election came at the end of a long day and saw him reach the quota with 1,418 votes and become the third member for the Carrick-on-Suir area to be elected.

Three more members were elected after Eddie, but none of these reached the quota. When the first South Tipp Co. Council was elected 115 years ago, in 1899 P.F Mullally of Kyleglanna was elected for the Mullinahone area. P.F. was re-elected to the 2nd Co. Council in 1902 and became it’s Chairman. It is nice to see another Mullinahone man elected to the new Tipperary Co. Council all those years later. Eddie, himself was elected to the now old South Tipperary Co. Council in 1999 after a period of 71 years when no Mullinahone person had been elected. Eddie was re-elected in 2004 and again in 2009. He has always been and Independent Councillor and has now been elected for the 4th time.

Community Park

The summer is finally on its way and so too is the good weather (hopefully) which means the park will be in full swing once again. We would like to remind people that the park is open to everyone. Anti-social behaviour or bullying will not be tolerated. The park has cc tv in operation 24/7. However, the onus is on all of us to monitor our facility and to report any incidents to a member of the committee. Hurling, pellet guns or bicycles are not permitted within the park at any time. We really do have a beautiful playground. We hope to run tennis and soccer again during the summer, so keep an eye out for these events. Let’s make the most of our park and the good weather. We hope to see you there.

Community Council

Mullinahone Community Council will hold an open meeting on Thursday May 15th in the Community Centre. We urge each club, society and group to have a representative present. We also invite individuals who have an interest in getting involved in the community council to attend. Our community council supports many groups in the locality and always seeks to improve the way of life of all in our community.

Community Improvements

A number of locals were recently discussing improvements in the community during the last dozen or so years. They came up with the following list which isn’t complete by any means. (l) the childrens’ playground in the Community Park (2) relief from flooding in the village due to the draining of the river (3) the provision of a good new and reliable water supply for the locality (4) the community text alert service (5) the community health centre (6) the local GAA centre (7) St. Michael’s state of the art village school. It should be realised that these improvements have benefitted the entire community, children, young people, adults and the elderly. Any person would admit that we have much to be grateful for. The Celtic Tiger was definitely persuaded to be generous in our locality.

Your Help Needed

A meeting will take place on Friday next, 16th May at 9pm in C.J.Kickham’s GAA Centre. Our local Independent candidate, Eddie O’Meara needs all your help in the final push for votes. We need to ensure that we have an Independent representative in the new Tipperary County Council to look after the needs of our community. We need a Councillor who is only answerable to the people of the local electoral area and not to Party Headquarters (far away). If you can help, come along on Friday evening at 9pm.

GAA news

Our U16 footballers play their semifinal on this Thurs. evening. As we go to press venue or opponents are not known. If the U16s win the final will be in Cahir on Sun. next at 12 noon. The loss by our senior hurlers to Ballina on Sat. night severely damages our championship prospects. It seems that only a South final can now save our season.

Local Elections

The race is definitely on in the 2014 local elections. The last week saw an outbreak of posters going up in the village. Our own Eddie O’Meara is contesting the election again as an Independent candidate. He has represented our community very well since he was first elected in 1999. It is only fair to say that many of the good things which has happened in our area since would not have happened without the help of Councillor O’Meara. As an Independent, Eddie has had no political party to depend on, but in spite of this ,he has done well for us all.
