St Mary’s Cemetery

E-mail Print PDF

Much work has been carried out in the old grave yard (St Mary’s) in Drangan over the last two years. Many old gravestones have been reset and some have to be repaired. A booklet is also to be published in the near future out lining the history of this old graveyard, which dates back to the 12th century. This was about the time the first Killaghy was built in Mullinahone.

The about to be published will include a record of all headstones and also a reference map of the graves with an index. Some photographs will also be included as a recent aerial photograph of Drangan village. It came as a surprise to some that so many Mullinahone families had graves in St. Mary’s. Of course one of the reasons for this could have been that Mullinahone and Drangan was a single parish until 1826 when they divided and Cloneen was added to Drangan parish.

Among the Mullinahone families with connections to the grave yard are Landy, Kenny Cummins, O’ Sullivan. Power , Egan , Brett, O Connor, Doheny, Mullally , Gleeson , Rev Thomas Carew CC, Quinnland, Ronan, Scott, Gregg, Gleeson.

I’m sure the list is not fully complete. The publication of the booklet will involve costs of €2,000 euro and donations are invited. All monies raised will go towards publication and any surplus will go towards the ongoing repair work.

If you wish to contribute you may contact any of the following: Brendan StJohn 086 8138265, Michael Hall 052 52122; Eamon O’Donovan 052 52120; James Keane 052 52244; James Dunne 087 2114994 or Jimmy Dunne 087 2114994 or Jimmy O Brien MCC, 087 6914648.

Any Donations would be much appreciated and ideally should be in as soon as possible.
